Ron Monk

Ron Monk is a Principal of Kerr Wood Leidal (KWL) and leads KWL’s Energy Sector. Ron has over thirty years of experience in the energy industry. He has held senior roles in both consulting engineering and with a major power utility, BC Hydro. Ron’s senior roles at BC Hydro included energy planning, rates and metering strategy, distribution operations, sustainability (including climate change strategy), research and development, and strategic planning.  He played a key role in transforming BC Hydro’s focus to energy efficiency and clean power.

Ron’s expertise includes energy planning for power and heat considering renewable, fossil fuels, transmission options, and demand management.  He has conducted feasibility studies for renewable energy projects, district energy systems, hydroelectric projects, and power lines. Ron has significant experience with design and construction of projects ranging from 80 kW to 3,000 MW.

Ron led the development of KWL’s Rapid Hydro Assessment Model (RHAM) and its use in evaluating hydro potential for Canada (British Columbia, Yukon, and Northwest Territories), Mexico and Brunei. He assists commercial, industrial, and mining companies with power supply evaluations and in obtaining connection to local power utilities.  Ron’s energy planning experience include BC Hydro’s 1995 and 2004 Integrated Electricity Plans which included First Nations and Stakeholder Engagement.  This complements Ron’s extensive experience working with First Nations on energy, water infrastructure, and salmon enhancement projects.
