Montana Burgess is the Executive Director of the West Kootenay EcoSociety. She has over 12 years of experience in the climate, energy and environmental non-profit sector in BC, Ottawa and internationally, including coordinating civil society at over 25 UN conferences.
Montana is currently leading the West Kootenay EcoSociety’s 100% Renewable Kootenays initiative that engages communities, businesses, and local governments to transition the West Kootenay region to 100% renewable energy at the community-level, in heating, cooling, transportation, electricity, and waste management by 2050. This initiative has worked with over 9,000 residents and over 65 businesses to support five local governments to say yes to 100% renewable energy, green jobs, and healthy communities. The EcoSociety is now working with these local governments to draft a regional-municipal joint strategy to map out how to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2050.
Montana is passionate about community organizing and partnership development to tackle big global issues in each person’s own backyard. She hopes this citizen-driven local government-focused renewable energy work being led by the EcoSociety will build a model for other communities across BC, Canada and the globe to adapt in their communities to achieve clean energy, and safe and healthy communities.
